When choosing which CoQ10 product to buy, it is important to determine the quality of the ingredients when making your decision. The better the quality of the ingredients, the more effective and healthier the CoQ10 product.

The first thing you want to look for is that the CoQ10 is manufactured by Kaneka. Kaneka CoQ10 is the only 100% pure yeast fermented CoQ10 with none of the impurities that synthetically processed CoQ10 contains. Much of the other CoQ10 on the market is processed using bacteria or tobacco derivatives. Kaneka CoQ10 is also the only CoQ10 made in the USA. Virtually all other CoQ10 is made in China (Beware, many CoQ10 supplements say, “Made in USA” on their label, even though they don’t use Kaneka CoQ10.) There are two forms of CoQ10 sold.  When buying the conventional ubiquinone form of CoQ10, look for Kaneka Q10© under Supplement facts; and when buying the advanced ubiquinol form, look for Kaneka Ubiquinol®.

When you purchase the UBIQUINOL form of CoQ10 (Kaneka Ubiquinol®), it is already in the form most utilized by your cells whereas conventional CoQ10 (ubiquinone) has to be converted by your body into Ubiquinol in order to create cellular energy and work as an antioxidant. As you age, experience illness, stress, fatigue, or take prescription drugs, your body’s ability to produce and convert ubiquinone to ubiquinol declines. Scientific studies confirm Ubiquinol to be significantly more bioavailable than conventional CoQ10 ubiquinone. In addition, Kaneka Ubiquinol® is an active antioxidant, whereas ubiquinone is not.

Check to make sure it is a non-GMO product. Some CoQ10 products use soy oil or soy lecithin in their softgel capsules. Most soy oil or soy lecithin is made from soybeans that are genetically modified.

Softgel capsules add a coloring agent in order to protect the ingredients in the capsule from degradation and for eye appeal. It’s best to avoid capsules using caramel coloring or titanium dioxide. Some forms of caramel coloring, which is an artificial coloring, contain a potentially carcinogenic chemical called “4-Mel”. Titanium dioxide, which is a common ingredient in sunscreen, has been labeled as a possible carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer. It’s healthier to choose capsules colored with annatto or carob, which are natural colorings. Annatto is a plant source coloring derived from the seeds of the achiote tree, and carob comes from the fruit of the carob tree.

Some brands of CoQ10 products add an ingredient to increase absorption. One of those ingredients is Polysorbate 80, which is an unnatural synthetic compound that is not considered healthy by many in the health industry. Animal test studies have shown adverse health effects, especially connected with bowel conditions. A healthier ingredient for extra enhanced CoQ10 absorption is medium chain triglycerides (MCTs), a natural ingredient from coconut oil or/and palm oil. Another healthy absorption enhancer used is black pepper extract.

Many supplements contain questionable additives and/or fillers that are unnecessary in a CoQ10 product. Types of ingredients to avoid are magnesium stearate, artificial flavors, artificial sweeteners and preservatives. In addition, it’s best to avoid rice powder or flour, which is used as a filler. Most rice has been found tainted with arsenic. Another filler that is better avoided is cellulose powder as it is made from wood and has been linked to digestive problems and inflammation.

If you are allergic to one or more food ingredients (or think you may be), look for a hypoallergenic product that is free of common allergens such as gluten, wheat, soy, peanuts/tree nuts, fish/shellfish, eggs, dairy or corn.

To receive uncompromising ingredient quality in a CoQ10 product, Ultimate CoQ10 UBIQUINOL avoids the unhealthy ingredients referred to in this article and contains only the recommended healthy ingredients.
